For industrial tomato paste buyers, crop season information is more than agricultural news.
Processing volumes, harvest timing, heat, rainfall, factory capacity and raw-material Brix can all affect product availability and procurement strategy.
The 2026 season is a useful example.
In June 2026, the World Processing Tomato Council estimated global processing tomato production at approximately 40.1 million tonnes, slightly below the approximately 40.4 million tonnes processed in 2025.
The headline number, however, tells only part of the story.

Regional conditions matter
By the end of July, WPTC reported unusually early processing in parts of Italy. Northern Italian factories had started significantly earlier than usual, while heat and rapid ripening were creating concern about concentrated harvest peaks and factory absorption capacity.
This is important for buyers because processing tomatoes are highly seasonal.
Even when total annual production appears sufficient, unusually concentrated harvesting can put pressure on processing lines, transportation and storage.
Iran also remains relevant to the processing tomato supply base
A WPTC presentation from June 2026 projected roughly 2.1 million tonnes of tomatoes for processing in Iran in the 2026 season, compared with about 1.8 million tonnes in 2025. The report referred to favourable early growing conditions and improved water availability.
For an export-oriented supplier operating in the region, this reinforces the importance of monitoring crop development rather than relying only on historical capacity.
Buyers should not purchase on crop volume alone
A large crop does not automatically guarantee the right tomato paste for every application.
Industrial purchasers still need to define the required technical profile.
For example, two buyers may both request aseptic tomato paste but have completely different requirements.
One may need:
36–38° Brix
high consistency
ketchup production
while another may require:
28–30° Brix
different break characteristics
sauce or food-service applications.
Therefore, market availability must always be evaluated together with Brix, colour, consistency, break type and microbiological specification.
Raw-material Brix deserves attention
WPTC reported an average raw tomato Brix of approximately 5.1° in early northern Italian processing as of July 2026.
Raw-material soluble solids influence processing economics because more water must be removed when incoming tomatoes have lower solids.
This does not mean buyers should judge finished paste solely from field Brix. Finished product conformity still needs to be confirmed through the agreed specification and batch analysis.
Processing capacity can become as important as crop size
One of the most interesting points in the 2026 season is the interaction between rapid ripening and factory capacity.
A large amount of fruit reaching maturity simultaneously can create bottlenecks even in a season with adequate total production.
For buyers purchasing substantial volumes, this reinforces the value of planning contracts and shipment schedules before the peak processing period.
What procurement teams should monitor
The strongest purchasing decisions combine crop intelligence with technical verification.
For every commercial offer, buyers should confirm required Brix, Hot Break or Cold Break specification where applicable, consistency, colour, packaging, quantity, shipment period and destination.
A representative TDS should be reviewed before the order, followed by batch-specific documentation for the actual shipment.
