When purchasing a bulk fruit ingredient, procurement teams naturally focus on Brix, acidity, microbiology, flavour and price.
But there is another component physically touching the product throughout storage and transportation:
the packaging itself.
Regulators are paying increasing attention to food-contact materials, and this makes packaging documentation more important for both exporters and buyers.

The EU BPA ban is one recent example
In December 2024, the European Commission adopted a ban on Bisphenol A in certain materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. The restriction covers applications where BPA has historically been used in certain plastics and resins, including some coatings.
The relevance to industrial ingredient buyers is not that every aseptic bag or steel drum necessarily contains BPA.
The important lesson is broader:
Food-contact composition must be verified, not assumed.
The outer drum and inner bag have different roles
A typical aseptic bag-in-drum system contains several components.
The inner aseptic bag is the primary food-contact package.
The steel or fibre drum generally protects the filled bag against mechanical damage.
Closures, liners, valves and other components may also form part of the packaging system.
Because each component has a different function, buyers should avoid treating “aseptic drum” as a complete technical description.
What does food-contact compliance actually mean?
The European Commission explains that food-contact materials should not transfer substances to food in quantities that could endanger human health, bring about unacceptable changes in composition, or adversely affect sensory characteristics such as taste and smell.
For an industrial buyer, the practical question becomes:
Can the supplier provide appropriate documentation for the packaging used for this specific product and market?
Packaging approval should happen before shipment
Packaging questions should ideally be resolved during supplier qualification, not after the container has arrived.
A professional buyer may want confirmation of the packaging format, food-contact declaration where relevant, net filling weight, storage limits, closure system and packaging manufacturer information.
Requirements vary between markets, products and contractual arrangements.
This is why blanket claims such as “international standard packaging” are not especially useful without further detail.
Product stability and packaging compliance are not the same thing
This distinction is particularly important.
A package may be manufactured from suitable food-contact materials but still be the wrong format for the intended storage conditions.
Similarly, a technically suitable aseptic package does not mean that every filled product can be stored indefinitely at ambient temperature.
Product-specific storage temperature and shelf life must come from the Technical Data Sheet and validated processing conditions.
Why this improves supplier relationships
Clear packaging documentation reduces unnecessary disputes.
When packaging format, net weight, storage and food-contact requirements are agreed before production, both parties have a defined commercial reference.
This matters even more in international transactions where replacing non-conforming bulk packaging can be costly and slow.
